"Assassins have no hearts, Gu Rou remembered. So in her previous life, she and her younger sister perished together. Awakening to find herself become a destitute young lady, she resided in someone else's house. To make ends meet, Gu Rou, a pair of hands that had once killed, took up the hoe, and unexpectedly saved a memory-lost drag. Is it too late now to send him back? A clean man, thoughtful, strong and pleasing to the eye, but as she kept raising him, the man disappeared. Aren't you supposed to repay the food you eat? Gu Rou grinds her knife, on the one hand, looking for a man, on the other hand, combating atrocious relatives. The net of conspiracy, at a time when she is untouchable, tightens ever more. But each time she faces danger, Gu Rou always turns peril into safety. She thought it was heaven's favor, until... "Miss, I've been eating your food for nothing. How about I offer myself in return?" Looking at the noble man approaching in front of her, Gu Rou blushed for the first time in her life.
Bang! Bang!
Two shots fired.
A hole was blown open in Gu Ruo's chest, and her blood was flowing out like money was no object.
With a trace of blood at the corner of her mouth, she looked at the woman holding the gun aimed towards her own head. "Hongxue, I am genuinely pleased to die at the hands of my own sister. I have no regrets."
"Gu Ruo, I really hate this pitiful look on your face," said Gu Hongxue coldly. "No wonder they say you're not suited to be an assassin, because you're too merciful."
Gu Ruo smiled faintly, her face pale but extremely beautiful. "You're right."
Suddenly, her eyes hardened, and she was holding a dagger without anyone knowing when she grabbed it.
Gu Hongxue didn't have time to react; the dagger had already slashed her throat.
Blood sprayed out, her airway was blocked, and she soon suffocated.
Clang!
The dagger fell from Gu Ruo's hand, dropping on the ground as she collapsed into a pool of blood.
She looked at the no longer twitching body of Gu Hongxue, gave a cold laugh, and slowly closed her eyes.
------
The noise near her ears was becoming unbearable. Gu Ruo was on the verge of losing her temper.
All of a sudden, she opened her eyes only to see an elderly woman standing in front of her, her eyes welled up with tears.
She blurted out, "Grandma Sun, what's happening outside?"
After she spoke, she was stunned for a moment, as a chaotic flood of memories surged into her mind.
Her brain seemed to throb with pain.
"Miss, you're awake." Gu Rou nodded, "Why all the noise outside?"
"The elder Han who took us in, his foolish granddaughter has been jilted. The other party still demands their betrothal gifts back." Grandma Sun said helplessly.
Gu Rou frowned, "Is there a problem?"
Grandma Sun glanced around the room, "This family has nothing to give. Yet, the other side demands three times the original amount."
Gu Rou thought for a bit. These kind-hearted people sheltered her; it would be ungrateful to ignore their situation. She got up, "Grandma Sun, help me up to see what's going on."
"Miss, you were rescued from the water by that simple girl from the Han family. Your body is still weak, you can't be out in the wind." Grandma Sun said worryingly, trying to stop her from leaving.
"I know my body's limits, do we have any money left?" Gu Rou asked again.
Speaking of money, tears welled up in Grandma Sun's eyes, "We didn't bring much silver when we left your maternal grandmother's house. After you fell into the water, all the silver was washed away."
Gu Rou paused, no wonder Grandma Sun looked helpless.
She's also a warm-hearted person; if she had money, she wouldn't just stand by.
"It's okay." Gu Rou comforted her, "Let's go take a look. There must be a way."
Grandma Sun nodded, helping Gu Rou to the front room outside.
A few people were seated in the main hall, all stunned when they saw Gu Rou step out.
Old Man Han even stood up, "Miss, you're awake."
Gu Rou flashed a faint smile, "Old Uncle Han, you don't have to be so courteous. Silly Girl saved me, and you took us in, we are indeed grateful."
Old Man Han smiled gently, "Miss, you needn't be so polite. Just rest assured and stay."
Speaking of Silly Girl, Gu Rou spotted a little girl with pigtail braids dressed in a light red quilted jacket standing by the side.
Around eleven or twelve years old, oval-faced with large eyes, the whites of her eyes stark against the black, yet her eyes were lifeless.
However, Gu Rou was still taken aback as it made her think of Hong Xiu, the girl who had depended on her since childhood, but in the end, wanted to kill her.
There was an ineffable feeling stirring within her heart.
"Enough with the chit-chat! Let's settle our matters first," the wife of the Chen family said exasperatingly.
Gu Rou, however, didn't even look at her. She only spoke to Old Man Han, "Uncle Han, there are guests in your house, and I shouldn't interfere. However, Silly Girl saved my life. I would like to establish a sisterhood with her and acknowledge her as my sister. What do you think?"
